School starts here we go,
How did we get here this fast?
The nest is quiet now.
The first day of school comes with a stack of emotions; some emotional mommas with littles hardly big enough to carry that backpack, some kiddos runnin’ with joy to meet new friends, some tweens with anxiety about if there new shoes are good enough, and some mini-adults learning to cook Ramen and fend for themselves in the dorm.
Whew, my social media feeds are swarming with a variety of reactions to the school year start. All the feelings ya’ll, all the feelings.
1 My heart is not proud, Lord,
my eyes are not haughty;
I do not concern myself with great matters
or things too wonderful for me.
2 But I have calmed and quieted myself,
I am like a weaned child with its mother;
like a weaned child I am content.
3 Israel, put your hope in the Lord
both now and forevermore.
The Lord brought me this from Psalm 131 when hanging out with him this morning. How beautiful the picture of a calm and quiet child content with its mother. May our hearts today be calmed and quieted. When the nest is quiet and empty may we find our Father there with us.
I started using this meditation practice a few years ago from the Liturgists, hope it brings you to a place of calmed and quieted as well. (This is also a very helpful practice to teach your kiddos for calming down at night, in situations of stress or in teaching them to pray for others as “me” can be replaced with other’s names as well.)
Centering Prayer II
During this period of quiet reflection, you may find it useful to repeat this mantra, “My God Loves Me” while touching each of your fingers in turn with your thumb. This has been shown to increase the neurological effectiveness of prayer and meditation, and it makes it easy to still wandering thoughts.
Simply alternate between periods of breathing meditation and mantra, in whatever pattern feels best to you.
