Sparks and Recreation

This September my hubby and I will celebrate nine years together. I remember being nervous a few years back about the supposed “7 years itch,” meh, whatever. Truly as the years go on it seems that married life becomes easier and harder. The easier part of marriage is that things feel routine. The harder part of marriage is that things feel routine.

I’ve been doing the 30 Day Kindness Challenge with Shaunti Feldhahn and each day receive challenges, tips, and such via email:

Spontaneity test! Do something spontaneously with your husband today. Take him out for ice cream, challenge him to a game of cards or a video game (depending on his interests!), go for a bike-ride, read a book together, or something else that you know he will enjoy. Leave the kids at home (if they’re old enough) or with a neighbor for this quick outing so that it’s just the two of you. Enjoy!

When we are away from home we often take time to do things that aren’t routine, go places we’ve never visited and try foods that are out of the box. We were away at the lake over the weekend and Friday night just lounging after dinner. “Wanna go check out some stars,” my husband asked. Yes, please. Sometimes just getting outside, gazing at the sky, listening to the sounds and slowing down to see the largeness of life can wake you up like nothing else.

When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers—
the moon and the stars you set in place—
what are mere mortals that you should think about them,
human beings that you should care for them?         Psalm 8

I’m thankful for the memory and the fun of still staying adventurous together. Spontaneity doesn’t have to be costly, it doesn’t have to be extravagant, but sometimes just doing something out of the normal routine can feel so sweet.

Are there local festivals going on in cities around you? This Summer we stumbled upon a firework show and a local town’s anniversary festival that was spontaneously perfect! (Here’s a fun resource to checkout festivals by date.) What spontaneous things have you enjoyed with your family? What something spontaneous that you could surprise your husband with? Please leave your ideas or great shares in a comment, perhaps you could spark creativity for another reader looking to change up their routine!
